AQWA's Mission Statement
AQWA's mission is to promote the visibility and empowerment of Asian and Pacific Islander queer, lesbian women and transgender individuals and to build a supportive, progressive community through social, political and educational activism. We are a network of Asian and Pacific Islander queer, lesbian and transgender individuals in the greater Los Angeles area. Our purpose is to create a sense of community, to increase our visibility and to build power within the API LGBTIQ community for social justice and equal treatment of our community through political organizing and conducting public education to combat racism, homophobia/heterosexism, sexism and all forms of oppression.
Committees
Education & Action
This committee explores and promotes the education and political awareness of Los Angeles' Asian and Pacific Islander LGBTQQI community, and members' transnational experiences. We sponsor the exciting, new monthly Queer Chats (every 4th Thursday of the month), providing a safe space for API queer women & transgender persons to support each other, build community, and advance a progressive agenda toward a queer-conscious and -affirming world. Past activities have included civic participation and voter engagement efforts, socials and film
screenings.
Outreach & Recruitment
This committee is in the process of finalizing their description.
Visibility & Media
This committee educates Asian ethnic and some mainstream media as well as the Los Angeles' Asian and Pacific Islander LGBTQQI community through print, broadcast and electronic medias. We generate stories, op-ed pieces, and letters to the editor for the issues relative to our community. We develop press releases and organize press conferences to educate the media about marriage equality issues and other current events, especially as they pertain to the Asian and Pacific Islander communities. We oversee the technology of the AQWA, primarily the operation and development of the website, mailing list, facebook page, and twitter. We also design and manage AQWA's branding through print collateral including advertisements, flyers, posters, business cards and stationery.
